ESPN’s’ Receiver Score ‘Metric shows how effectively the top three of the Indianapolis Colts’ was the top three during the 2024 season.

Bill Barnwell from ESPN has recently arranged all 32 skills position units. Despite the strangers that the Colts have on Quarterback, he is Bullish about the group of the team, largely because of the wide recipient trio of Michael Pittman, Josh Downs and Alec Pierce.

Although the Colts had to deal with inconsistent Quarterback game last season, they were the only team in the NFL with three Wideouts All Eclipse 800 receiving yards. Further proof of the effectiveness of this group lies in their individual recipient scores.

With the help of tracking data from NFL Next Gen Stats, this metric evaluates every route that a pass catcher runs and scores their performance based on whether or not they are open, if they have made the reception and a YAC that was collected.

Among all broad receivers last season, Downs would be in 15th place in the recipient score, Pierce was 37th and Pittman was 70th.

“There is an underestimated trio here,” wrote Barnwell.

Also not to mention with a broad recipient, Ad Mitchell, who has compiled this a strong show as this season outside the season.

Together with the individual production that each of these receivers brings to the table, Pittman, Downs and Pierce also have different skills, which from a schematic position Shane Steichen offers sufficient flexibility while putting together game plans to attack opposing defenses.

I have said it before and I am at the point of saying it again: with a steady quarterback game-it does not have to be great, the Colts the Colts the infrastructure around that position to be successful.

“No other group of recipients suffers because of the situation,” wrote Barnwell. “The Colts fell for only 567 passes last season, the fourth lowest total of each team. Almost 21% of those passes were not on goal, the second highest percentage in the competition.”
