India is concerned about their own injury after Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant spent most of the day of the field after a blow to his left index finger.
Just like Stokes, Pant had a treatment round on the field before he was hit for the second time and tried an attempt at a take the leg side of Pace Bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
He was not seen after the 34th of the day, with replacement Dhruv Jurget who stepped behind the stumps and held an excellent catch to dismiss Pope.
The tourists have no pant plans to have an X -ray before the second day starts.
Pope, who was closed off from his first ball, made 44 in a third Wicket stand of 109 with carrot.
On a slow field near Lord’s, against a number of excellent Indian bowling, England were forced to curb their attacking instincts. A run-rate of 3.02 per over is their slowest for a total of more than 200 since Stokes became captain three years ago.
“It is not necessary the way we are used to following a first innings, but I think 251-4 is a fairly good score at the moment,” said Pope.
“It was clear that we would have liked some runs, but the nature of the surface and the way in which the Indian attack Bowlode was pretty good.
“It is a day that we will take. We had to adapt as we play, but hopefully it is a score that we can really attract and make it north of 400, to 500.”
