Stories of chimney mantle: When a mess in vintage gold changed

Last month collector, reseller and mantle user Chris B., who passes by AllSet24 Online, waved through the attic of a customer on a realestate reference – and in just a few hectic minutes he walked away with one of the most surprising vintage Hauls we have ever seen. This is how an apparently ordinary folder, blind, revealed Hall of Famers and Prospect precious stones of the Golden Age of cardboard.

“I hardly went in,” said Chris. His mother -car, a real agent, had handed over a handful of blurry photos and they all looked like Jungwas from the 90s. But when he entered the almost empty house, he saw two binders hidden behind a dusty workbench. “I saw a mantle all stars page and a few Willie Mays cards with low degrees, made a fast offer and then hurried back to the car, my children were ready to melt.”

A few days later, Chris spread the binder on his dining table and ran through page after page of the 1950s and 1960 treasures. “My first thought was:” Wow, there were better things here than I expected, “he says. He then posted the finds on mantle. Under the Low -Grade Commons was a tops Mantle All Stars Card from 1958, a Hank Aaron from 1971, a crispy tops trio from 1968 with Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Harmon Killebrew and even a 1976 Kareem Abdul Jabbar. For a modern guy this was an emergency course in vintage history.

Although he is not going to build a vintage set, Chris has a weakness for the striking binder. Are top three cards? “Definitely the Mantle All Stars, the Mays-Mantle-Killebrew card, and that ‘the catch’ Mays. I will probably never personally treat another cloak personally.”

Chris finances his hobby by selling, and this blind purchase was pure upside down, the proof that even seasoned collectors can still stumble on a forgotten stock. Nowadays, his focus has shifted back to modern parallels: “I hunt for every unique Stevie Johnson card, 44.4 percent of his printed run so far. Real it when you see extras!”

Above all, the binder Chris reminded why collecting is just as good about the tension of discovery as about the cards themselves. “Blind purchases are one -off for me,” he said. “But this one has certainly paid off.”
